However, when winter comes, the weather can take its toll on outdoor signage and leave you with something that is less than appealing. So, how do you look after your fascia signage in the winter? What is fascia signage?
There are all different types of signage to promote your business, but fascia signage is amongst the most recognisable. Fascia signage is a term that is used to describe any kind of signage attached to the front of a building or the fascia as it is known.
These are usually flat and do not protrude from the building and can be made up of individual letters, flex face signs, aluminium tray signs and illuminated signs amongst other styles.
How to protect your business signage during winter?
Choose quality
When you commission a sign, order the highest quality that you can afford as it is more likely to last. Think about the conditions it will face and order something that will be durable or that you are able to look after.
Moving signs
If you have a sign which has a hinge or any moving parts, then they could become vulnerable in high winds. You might want to consider securing anything that moves with wire during the winter as the wind can cause significant damage if you are not careful.
Metal signs
Metal signs are extremely popular and can be very resilient, particularly if they are aluminium or stainless steel as these are rust resistant. Other metals might be susceptible to corrosion, so it might be worth considering applying a waterproof sealant to protect them.
Illuminated signs
Illuminated signs are usually powered by electricity, so you need to be mindful of this as the weather worsens and the rain and snow starts to hit. Water damage could short circuit your sign, so check for any cracks or crevices where water could seep in. You should also check for a build-up of debris such as leaves around power points as this could lead to overheating and pose a fire risk.
Wooden signs
Wooden signs can suffer in damp conditions or changing temperatures, so they will need some care an attention during the winter. Start by making sure that they are coated with a laminate or water repellent and then consider applying plastic or metal caps to the edges of the signs in order to prevent water from seeping in and warping the wood.
You should keep a careful eye out for signs of rot, mould or mildew as these can be disastrous for a wooden sign. If any appear, make sure that you remove them as soon as possible.

Your fascia signage could be made from many different materials and treated in a variety of ways. Often signage that has been designed to be used outdoors has been made to withstand the elements, so read the instructions or check with the manufacturer for the best way to take care of it as you could be doing more harm than good if you are not sure what you are doing.
Your signage is often responsible for giving the first impression of your business, so you want to make sure that it is looking good all year round. The changes in temperature, wet weather and wind can all affect your sign, so make sure that you keep this in mind when you order yours.
